Fermentation & scale-up
Biocatalysis is the use of enzymes as catalysts for chemical reactions.

Enzymes are proteins which form a structure containing an active site, responsible for their specific catalytic activity. Thanks to this active site, enzymatic transformations are usually selective and allow enantioselectivity and regioselectivity.

Biocatalysis gives access to greener synthesis pathways performed under mild conditions, such as aqueous solvent, atmospheric pressure and room temperature, requiring no or residual metal content. Moreover, enzymes are renewable and biodegradable catalysts.

Enzymes involved in biocatalytic processes are not anymore limited to lipases and ketoreductases. Nowadays, the range of enzymes available for process chemistry applications have expanded. Seqens offers an access to its catalog of enzymes covering all common biocatalysis mediated chemical transformations such as reduction, oxidation, chiral transformation, hydratation, hydrolysis, esterification.

Since 1998, Protéus* has been a pioneer in enzyme optimization, utilizing proprietary directed evolution technologies such as Evosight® and L-Shuffling®.

Today, our enzymes are selected from our proprietary libraries of genes. Protéus offers to its customers access to a catalog of innovative catalysts as well as a larger choice of improved catalysts from smart libraries developed with our computational partners leader in the field.

To produce tailor-made enzymes / biocatalysts, a fermentation process must be developed at the required scale.

The most suitable microbial host (bacteria or yeast) will be selected according to the targeted application and final formulation of the enzyme (for instance purified enzyme or whole cell biocatalyst).
SEQENS has internal fermentation and DSP capabilities up to 300L scale, which is compatible with some commercial applications and sufficient for the development of a process book to scale-up processes through our network of carefully selected external partners.
